Game Two Box Score
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna baseball team used a combined 12 runs to take two conference games from Juniata on Friday afternoon. The Crusaders grabbed game one by a 6-1 score and held off the Eagles to take game two 6-3.
With the wins, SU improved to 12-19 overall and 7-7 in league play while Juniata fell to 5-9 in conference action and 13-19 overall.
Susquehanna’s game one starter, Keith Needham (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area), went the distance and gave up just one run on six hits with two strikeouts.
At the plate, Erik Tuomisto (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy/Pitt.-Johnstown) had a three-hit effort with two RBI while Ken Kayama [Koto-Ku, Japan/Solebury (Pa.)] had three RBI to go along with one hit.
Juniata took an early 1-0 lead in the first on a Russel Gray sac fly. That lead did not last long, though, as SU put three runs on the board in its half that inning thanks to three hits and a sac fly. Ethan Rieker (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) and Tuomisto both had RBI singles and Kayama sent home the third run on his sac fly to centerfield.
The Crusaders tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth on Kayama’s triple to right center that plated Nick Ferlise (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Tuomisto, who had both reached on singles.
SU gave Needham one more run to work with in the sixth when Tuomisto came through with another RBI single in the sixth to make it 6-1.
Needham retired the Eagles in order in the seventh to end the game.
Game two saw SU use three pitchers and finish with just five hits to Juniata’s nine, but the outcome remained the same as the Crusaders held on for another win. Starter Matt Boyd (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) went 5.1 innings and gave up no earned runs. Relievers Matt Smith (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.) and Andy Hergan (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) combined to allow only one run in their 1.2 innings of work.
Kayama had two more hits for SU and scored another, while designated hitter Ferlise drove home two runs.
Susquehanna used a Rieker sac fly and took advantage of a Juniata throwing error to put two runs on the board in the second.
The Crusaders added another pair of runs in the third and fourth innings. In the third, the runs scored on a two-RBI single from Ferlise and in the fourth, a Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa.) sac fly and a wild pitch led to two additional runs and a subsequent 6-0 SU lead.
Boyd cruised until the sixth, when he ran into a jam. An error by third baseman Dan Wing (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) and shortstop Calvin Hug (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) allowed two Juniata runs to score, cutting Susquehanna’s lead to two (6-2).
The Eagles got to Hergan for one run in the seventh, but with one runner on and one out, Hergan forced Ian Thorne to ground into a game-ending double play, securing the doubleheader sweep for his squad.
