SELINSGROVE, Pa. – In a game that featured a combined twenty-six runs and 34 hits, the Susquehanna baseball team fell on the short end of a 17-9 decision to Albright on the program's Senior Day. The Crusaders finished with 14 of those hits, including three home runs, as they played their fourth game in four days.
SU (12-22) used five pitchers in the loss with senior Joe Schurig (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) getting the start and lasting 2.2 innings.
At the plate, senior Justin Portzline (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) and Ethan Rieker (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) both went 4-for-5 with six runs and four RBI between them. Nick Ferlise (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) also drove in two runs on two hits, with one of those a two-run homer. Portzline and Rieker added the other two homers for the Crusaders.
Albright (7-23) put three runs on the board in the first while SU countered with two of its own, with both scoring on Ken Kayama's [Koto-Ku, Japan/Solebury (Pa.)] two-run single.
Schurig was tagged for two more runs in the second and three in the third as Susquehanna trailed 8-2 heading into its half of the third.
In that inning, Rieker plated two runs on his two-run shot to left field and senior Erik Tuomisto (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy/Pitt-Johnstown) drove home another with a two-out RBI single.
The Lions took a 10-5 lead in the fourth and that remained the score until the top of the seventh, when Albright scored four more runs to make it 14-5.
SU put together a power surge in its half of the seventh, though, as Portzline hit a two-run shot and Ferlise followed with a two-run home run of his own for a 14-9 ballgame.
Unfortunately that momentum did not last as the Lions took a 17-9 edge with a three-run eighth and retired SU in order in the ninth to end the game.
The team honored the six seniors on its roster prior to the start of the game: Andy Hergan (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area), Geoff Hunter (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area), Keith Needham (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area), Portzline, Schurig and Tuomisto.
Next game: Tuesday, April 26 at Lebanon Valley – 4 p.m.
