BETHLEHEM, Pa. – An eighth-inning homer off the bat of Nick Ferlise (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) put the Susquehanna baseball team within one run of top-seeded Moravian in the opening game of the Landmark Conference Tournament. Unfortunately, the Greyhounds were able to hang on for the 5-3 victory on Saturday afternoon in Bethlehem.

SU (14-25) will now play loser of No. 2 Scranton vs. No. 3 Catholic on Sunday at 9 p.m.

Ferlise finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Dan Wing (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) also added a solo shot for the Crusaders (14-25) and he went 1-for-4.

On the mound, senior Keith Needham (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) pitched 7.2 innings and despite giving up 10 hits, surrendered just five runs, only three of which were earned.

The game opened in SU’s favor as Ferlise came up with a sac fly that scored Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa.), who had led off with a single to the pitcher.

The lead did not last long, though, as the Greyhounds (31-7) put together a three-run first inning thanks to two RBI hits and a Crusader throwing error that allowed the third run to come home.

Susquehanna made it a two-run game in the fourth thanks to Wing’s one-out, solo home run to left field. Four innings went by without another run from either team before Ferlise homered to right field to quickly cut Moravian’s lead to one run (4-3).

The Greyhounds’ Jason Huber countered with a RBI single through the left side to up his squad’s lead back to two runs and the Crusaders were retired in order in the ninth.
