Box Score

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – An eighth-inning rally given up by the Susquehanna baseball team allowed Scranton to take the 6-4 victory and eliminate the Crusaders from the Landmark Conference Tournament.

SU (14-26) was tied with the second-seeded Royals 4-4 before Scranton (23-17) scored two runs in the eighth inning to steal the win.

The Crusaders did nearly double-up Scranton in hits, pounding out 13 to the Royals’ seven. Ethan Rieker (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) went 3-for-5 with two of those hits coming via the home run, while also driving in four and scoring two more. Dan Wing (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) and Ben Anderson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) also added three hits piece while Justin Portzline (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area/Allegany J.C.) had two hits and scored SU’s other two runs.

Sophomore Matt Boyd (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) got the starting nod and went seven-plus innings, giving up six runs, only three of which were earned. He struck out eight Royals and walked just two.

Rieker came up with a RBI single in the first that scored Portzline, who had reached on a double, to give his squad the early 2-0 lead.

The Royals were held without a run until the third when they put two runs across thanks in part to two SU errors. They tacked on another run in the fourth to lead 3-1.

Susquehanna put a two-spot of its own on the board in the top of the fifth on Rieker’s two-run shot to left centerfield to knot it at three-all.

Both teams pushed across solo runs in the seventh with Rieker providing the scoring on his left-off shot to left center.

Tim LeCompte added a solo, game-tying run in the seventh.

With the game tied four-all heading into the eighth, the Royals took advantage of an inning-opening error that opened the door for two runs to eventually score and hand Scranton the 6-4 edge.

The Crusaders put their leadoff runner on base in the ninth but left him stranded with three straight outs to end the game.
