FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Susquehanna’s baseball team split its double-header with Marywood on Monday afternoon. The Crusaders lost the first game 5-1 but responded with a 10-9 victory in the second contest.
In Game Two, SU (3-5) gave up two runs in the top half of the first to the Pacers (2-1). The Crusaders' first two batters walked to lead off the bottom of the first and Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa. / Upper Dauphin Area) loaded the bases with a bunt single.
Ethan Reiker (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Twp.) blasted a two-run single to tie the game at 2-2. Nick Ferlise (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North) then ripped a two-run double of his own to give SU the lead 4-2.
Nick Kennedy (Brookeville, Md. / Good Council) successfully laid down a squeeze bunt to score Ferlise. Jared Mussilli (Branchville, N.J. / High Point Regional) hit an RBI single to put the Crusaders ahead 6-2.
Marywood scored two more runs in the top of the second to trim the lead to 6-4. But SU answered quickly with four more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Rieker cracked an RBI triple, Ferlise hit a run scoring single and Greg Stellon (Chadds Ford, Pa. / Tatnall School) knocked in two runs.
The Pacers kept the game close, scoring two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to only trail 10-9 entering the last inning. But the Crusaders closed the door and escaped with a 10-9 win.
Matt Lottes (Muttontown, N.Y. / Long Island Lutheran) earned the victory on the mound and Spencer Hotaling (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove Area) picked up the save.
Rieker went 4-for-4 with three RBI and Ferlise batted 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead SU.
In Game One, Marywood pitcher Tim Freda only surrendered one hit, a Kennedy single, as the Pacers won 5-1.
The Crusaders are off tomorrow and are back in action on Wednesday to play Misericordia at noon.
