SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna baseball team picked up its second straight win, as well as its third home win of the season, with a 7-3 win over visiting Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday afternoon. Three pitchers combined to give up one earned run while 10 hits from the Crusader bats provided more than enough offense.
The big blow in the game came off the bat of Ethan Rieker (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) in the form of a three-run homer in third inning that proved to be the difference in the game for Susquehanna (9-8).
Rieker finished the game with two hits and five RBI and leadoff hitter Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin Area) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Starting pitcher Casey Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock/IUP) tossed seven shutout innings scattering just four hits while striking out four and Spencer Hotaling (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) pitched a scoreless eighth. Matt Smith entered in the ninth and gave up three runs, but only one earned, to briefly make it a game before getting Kevin Shields to fly out to left field for the final out of the game.
SU pushed across a run in the first on a Rieker RBI double to center. The senior then plated Calvin Hug (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) and Raubenstine with his three-run shot to give the Crusaders 4-0 lead after the third.
Susquehanna added three more runs in the sixth thanks to a Hug RBI bunt, a bases-loaded walk to Dan Wing (West Chester, Pa./Unionville/Catawba) and a Rieker sac fly.
The Diplomats (9-7) waited too long to get their offense going as their three ninth-innings runs were too little too late.
Susquehanna hits the road on Saturday for a doubleheader at PSU-Berks starting at 1 p.m.
