SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Sophomore pitchers Spencer Hotaling (Selinsgrove, Pa. / Selinsgrove Area) and Casey Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) both threw complete game shutouts as Susquehanna baseball defeated Moravian twice on Saturday in the Crusaders’ Landmark Conference home opener.
Hotaling earned his third win of the year in game one (W, 2-0). The righty threw a two-hitter, striking out four, issuing only one walk and forcing 14 ground outs.
The Crusaders (10-11, 4-1) scored the game’s first run in the fourth. Bryan Palsi (Brielle, N.J. / Manasquan) led off with a single up the middle and was moved to second after a sac bunt by Nick Ferlise (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River North). Kyle Semmel (Burlington Twp., N.J. / Holy Cross) cracked an RBI single to score Palsi and give SU a 1-0 lead.
SU tacked on another run in the fifth as Jared Musilli (Branchville, N.J. / High Point Regional) and Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa. / Upper Dauphin) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Dan Wing (West Chester, Pa. / Unionville) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly later in the frame to push the Crusader lead to 2-0.
Hotaling gave up a double to the Greyhounds (10-9, 4-4) in the seventh, but settled down with two ground outs to end the contest.
In the night cap, Hood scattered only four hits and struck out a pair to earn his third win of the season as the Crusaders offense opened up to win 6-0.
SU scored twice in the bottom of the third. Wing drove in another run with a single to left and Palsi registered an RBI on a groundout to give the Crusaders a 2-0 edge.
In the fourth, Semmel led off with a walk and stole second base. Dylan Glassmire (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks South) drove Semmel in with an RBI single to right center. Glassmire later scored on a throwing error by Moravian and Nick Kennedy (Brookeville, Md. / Good Council) picked up an RBI single to right, increasing the SU lead to 5-0.
