ASTON, Pa. – The Susquehanna baseball team could not come up with enough offense to overcome Neumann University, falling 5-1 on Thursday afternoon as the team played its second road game in as many days.
SU (12-20) actually out-hit the Knights (20-9) with seven hits to Neumann's five. Ty Raubenstine (Elizabethville, Pa./Upper Dauphin Area) collected two of those hits for the Crusaders while Chris Ryan (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) had one hit and one RBI.
Starter Brian Wendig (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) pitched 3.2 innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on three hits. Three different pitchers combined to pitch the remainder of the game with Fabian Stone (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) tossing two shutout innings.
Neumann scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the second on a Crusader fielding error and broke through for three runs the following inning on two hits and two more SU errors that made it a 4-0 ballgame.
The Knights tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth before SU finally got on the board in the top of the seventh when Ryan came through with a RBI single that scored Jared Musilli (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) who had reached base on a fielder's choice.
Susquehanna put two runners on base in the eighth and another in the ninth but could not get any of those runners home as Neumann came away with the win.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Landmark Conference opponent Catholic with game one scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
