SELINSGROVE, Pa. – After being named the Landmark Conference Pitcher of the Week, Susquehanna senior closer Matt Smith (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. / Wyoming Seminary) has been named the Honorable Mention Pitcher of the Week on D3Baseball.com, selected by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
In six appearances, Smith recorded five saves in 7.1 innings and struck out seven as the Crusaders (7-3) won their final seven games of the spring break trip in Fort Pierce, Fla. The senior allowed only four hits, one walk and one earned run and finished the week with a 1.23 ERA and a batting average against of .148.
Against Massachusetts Maritime Academy on March 3, Smith pitched 2.2 innings and recorded one save as the Crusaders split with the Buccaneers. On March 4 versus No. 21 Misericordia, Smith threw 1.2 innings, earning the save as SU upset the Cougars, 3-2.
On March 5, SU defeated La Roche 3-2 with Smith registering the save in one inning of work, despite surrendering his first run of the spring. Versus Marywood on March 6 (W, 4-1), the righty struck out two in one inning and earned the save.
Finally, on March 6, Smith recorded four strikeouts and the save as SU defeated Arcadia 5-3 in 12 innings, the program's longest game in seven years. Smith now has 17 career saves in 53 appearances and is only three saves away from the most in single-season history.
Smith and the Crusaders open up Landmark play against Juniata this weekend, with the series being played at Bucknell's Depew Field.
