SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Baseball and women’s track are represented as this week’s Pepsi/SAAC Super Crusaders as junior designated hitter Kyle Semmel (Burlington Twp., N.J. / Holy Cross) and sophomore mid-distance runner Ashley West (East Hampton, N.Y. / East Hampton) have been selected for the period ending March 16.
Semmel helped lead the Crusaders (10-3, 3-0 Landmark) to a three-game sweep of Juniata in this weekend’s Landmark Conference opening series held at Bucknell University’s Depew Field.
Semmel batted .667 with eight hits including two triples and a double. The junior scored five runs, had one RBI, one walk and three stolen bases while striking out just once all weekend.
This season, Semmel has started ten games and leads the squad in batting average (.447). He is tied for the team lead in hits (17) and triples (2) and has recorded four doubles and six RBI.
Semmel and the Crusaders are in the midst of a 10-game winning streak, the program’s longest since 1995. SU is scheduled to host Merchant Marine Academy on March 22-23.
West, meanwhile, became SU’s first female indoor track & field All-American since 2007 with her eighth-place finish at Saturday’s NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in Lincoln, Neb.
The sophomore finished with a time of 2:15.88 on the bank track to place eighth overall, becoming the first female indoor All-American since Emily Lepley ’07 Shank in 2007.
In addition to being the first female All-American for Susquehanna since 2007, West is also the first All-American for either the men's or women's indoor programs since Paul Thistle '10 in 2010.
The 2014 outdoor track & field season begins on Saturday, March 22 at the Juniata Invitational.
