SELINSGROVE, Pa. – After leading the Susquehanna baseball team its most successful season in program history, two pitchers have been named 2014 All-Mid-Atlantic Region by D3baseball.com.
Junior starting pitcher Casey Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) earned First-Team recognition and senior closer Matt Smith (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. / Wyoming Seminary) was named to the Second Team.
Hood, the Landmark Conference Pitcher of the Year, led the Crusaders with a 9-1 record this spring, setting the mark for most wins in a single season. The lefty pitched 75 innings and two complete games, compiling a 2.76 ERA, 54 strikeouts and only five walks.
Smith, meanwhile, set the single-season program record with 12 saves this year. The righty recorded a 1.63 ERA in 27.2 innings out of the bullpen, striking out 26 with an opponents’ batting average of .141. A First-Team All-Landmark member, Smith recorded 24 career saves (a Landmark record) in 65.1 innings.
Hood and Smith were part of a pitching staff that put together a team ERA of 2.81, the lowest in the Landmark this season and lowest in SU history.
The Crusaders won a program-best 30 games including a pair of wins in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals.
