Hood Dominates Merchant Marine

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna starting pitcher Casey Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) tossed a complete game, two-hit game to help guide the Crusader baseball team to a 2-1 victory over visiting USMMA on Saturday afternoon.

On a cold and blustery day, Hood made quick work of the Mariners. He did not surrender a hit until the fifth inning, struck out 11 USMMA (7-5, 5-2) batters and did not walk a batter.

The SU bats provided just enough offense to pick up the win for Hood and the Crusaders (7-7, 4-2). Taylor Luckenbill (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) had two hits and one RBI while Zach Leone (Pelham, N.Y./Fordham Prep/University of Massachusetts) had two hits and accounted for the other RBI in the game.

Susquehanna took a 1-0, first inning lead when Leone drove home Luckenbill, who had reached base with a hit, followed by a steal of second.

The Crusaders maintained that 1-0 lead until the Mariners plated the game-tying run in the top of the fifth on a Cameron Stadele solo shot to left field which marked the first hit off Hood.

In the bottom of the seventh, Luckenbill broke the tie with a RBI single to first base that allowed Nick Kennedy (Brookeville, Md./Good Council) to score what proved to be the game-winning run.

The Crusaders and Mariners conclude their three-game series on Sunday, March 29 with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
