Series Sweep for Baseball

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Landmark Conference rival USMMA by taking both games of Sunday's doubleheader.

The Crusaders won game one 4-0 behind a complete game shutout on the arm of Spencer Hotaling (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) before going on to a 3-1 game two victory.

In game one, Hotaling gave up a mere two hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts and only one walk to pick up his third victory of the spring.

Leadoff hitter Danny Gordon (Fairfax Station, Va./South County) went 2-for-3, the only player in the game with multiple hits, while Zach Leone (Pelham, N.Y./Fordham Prep/University of Massachusetts) drove in two of SU's four runs.

Susquehanna gave Hotaling a lead with a run in the second which scored on a Mariners' throwing error. The following inning, Leone drove home two runs on a double to left center to make it 3-0.

SU remained ahead 3-0 before tacking on an insurance run in the sixth when Bryan Palsi's (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) RBI double to center plated Kyle Semmel (Burlington Twp., N.J./Holy Cross) for a 4-0 Crusader lead.

Hotaling gave up a leadoff single in the seventh but struck out the next three batters to close out the win.

SU used clutch hitting in game two to give starting pitcher A.J. Pinto (Bronxville, N.Y./Fordham Prep) his third win this season. Taylor Luckenbill (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) had two hits, scored two runs and drove in another. Leone added another RBI hit in the game.

Pinto pitched 6.1 innings of one-run ball, scattering two hits while striking out five. Liam Conboy (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) tossed the final 2/3 inning in his fourth appearance of the season.

In the bottom of the first, Leone drove home the game's first run with a single down the left field line to score Luckenbill. Two innings later, Luckenbill came up with a RBI hit of his own for a 2-0 game and Palsi followed with a single to left that scored Luckenbill for a 3-0 SU lead.

In the top of the very next inning, the Mariners got on the board after a Crusader fielding error but Pinto and Conboy kept USMMA off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

Susquehanna is back in action on Monday, March 30 with a 3:30 p.m. game at Drew, a rescheduled game from earlier in the season.
