GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Sixteen hits and 18 runs provided enough offense to guide the Susquehanna baseball team to an 18-11 road win at Gwynedd-Mercy.

The Crusaders (12-10) scored at least one run in six of nine innings, including a five-run sixth inning. Justin Cassinelli (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla/SUNY Westchester CC) accounted for four of SU's 16 hits, one of nine players to pick up at least one hit in the game. Cassinelli drove in five runs while brother Matt Cassinelli (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla/SUNY Westchester CC) had three hits, three runs scored and three RBI.

Bobby Klatt (Leonardo, N.J./Mater Dei Prep) got the start – the first of his career – and tossed five innings of three-run ball with just one of those runs earned. He gave up just five hits and struck out three batters.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with Justin Cassinelli driving in the first run and Tom Shields (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) plating the final two with a two-run double.

SU added another three runs in the second off three hits and two Griffins errors.  In the top of the very next inning, Justin Cassinelli accounted for all three of Susquehanna's runs that inning with a three-homer to left field for a 9-0 ballgame.

Gwynedd-Mercy got on the board with one run in the bottom of the third and added two more in the bottom of the fifth, none of which were earned.

Matt Cassinelli and Dylan Jenkins (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin) each drove in runs in the top of the fifth to make it an eight-run Crusader lead (11-3). Matt Cassinelli and Jenkins then added RBI triples in the sixth to help make it a 16-3 game.

Andrew Leitzel (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) entered the game for Klatt in the sixth and Gwynedd-Mercy added a run to make it 16-4 with three innings left to play.

The Griffins added another two runs the next inning before the Crusaders added two of their own in the top of the eighth to regain a 12-run lead (18-6).

The Griffins' bats came to life in the bottom of the eighth, though. They scored five runs in the inning with Beau Fleming's three-run double the big hit in the inning as he made it an 18-11 game with that hit.

Gwynedd-Mercy put two runners on base with one out in the bottom of the ninth but Cole Luzins (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) retired the final two batters to preserve the 18-11 Crusader victory.

Susquehanna remains on the road to face Lebanon Valley on April 8 at 4 p.m.
