Long Day for Crusader Baseball

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna baseball team could muster only three runs in 18 innings and dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Landmark Conference foe Moravian.

SU was blanked 3-0 in game one before falling 5-3 in 11 innings in the night cap.

Game one starter Casey Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) gave up only four hits and three runs (one earned) in his seven innings of work but took the loss. Susquehanna had just three hits in the game against three Moravian pitchers.

The Greyhounds went ahead 1-0 in the top of the third after a fielding error and a sac bunt in the top of the sixth pushed home another run for a 2-0 Moravian advantage.

Moravian tacked on an insurance run on a sac fly in the top of the seventh and relief pitcher Hunter Guard worked around two seventh-inning singles with a game-ending double play.

Seven innings weren't enough to determine a winner in game two; it took 11 innings and two Moravian runs in the top of the 11th to seal the doubleheader sweep for the Greyhounds.

Spencer Hotaling (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) pitched all but the final two innings and gave up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and no walks.

Taylor Luckenbill (Pottsville, Pa./Nativity BVM) was 3-for-5 while Zach Leone (Pelham, N.Y./Fordham Prep/University of Massachusetts) and Bryan Palsi (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) each had two hits and one RBI apiece.

Each team scored one run in their respective halves of the second inning. A Greyhounds sac bunt made it 1-0 before Palsi singled home Leone to make it 1-1.

It remained 1-1 after seven, forcing extra innings. Moravian quickly went ahead 3-1 in the eighth on RBI hits by Colin Case and Matt Hanson.

SU countered with two runs of its own, though, in the bottom of the eighth. Leone drove home the first run of the inning to pull the Crusaders within one (3-2) and Matt Cassinelli's (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla/SUNY West Chester CC) RBI single to center scored Justin Cassinelli (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla/SUNY West Chester CC) to tie the game at three and keep the game in extra innings.

In the bottom of the 10th, Susquehanna left the bases loaded, missing out on a chance to end the game.

Moravian again broke the with two runs in the 11th on a RBI single to short with the final run of the inning scoring on a double play.

SU put two runners on base but with two outs, Leone flied out to right field.

The series concludes on Sunday with first pitch at 12 p.m.
