SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna baseball team picked up a 4-3 home win over York on Thursday afternoon to capture back-to-back wins and improve to 9-3 at home.
The Crusaders used a two-run eighth inning to take a 4-2 lead and closer Liam Conboy (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) picked up his fifth save of the year in the top of the ninth.
SU starter Bobby Wittemann (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) went seven innings and gave up just two unearned runs with six strikeouts and no walks. The Susquehanna bullpen, including an inning of work from Conboy, pitched two innings of one-run ball.
Matt Cassinelli (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla/SUNY Westchester CC) drove in three of SU's four runs while Justin Cassinelli (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla/SUNY Westchester CC) went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Susquehanna put up a run in the bottom of the first when Matt Cassinelli hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Tom Shields (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) to come around to score on a York throwing error.
The Spartans got that run back in the top of the very next inning before Matt Cassinelli came through with a RBI sac bunt in the bottom of the sixth to break the tip and put the Crusaders up 2-1.
Unfortunately, York countered with a run of its own in the top of the seventh but Matt Cassinelli and Kyle Semmel (Burlington Twp., N.J./Holy Cross) each had RBI hits in the bottom of the eighth to break the tie and make it 4-2 after eight.
Conboy came in to pitch the ninth. Two Crusader errors and a walk loaded the bases for York and Brad Wenzel's sac fly made it a one-run game (4-3). Fortunately, Conboy got Stephen Miele to ground out to third to end the game.
Susquehanna remains at home to host Elizabethtown on Saturday, April 25 with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
