High Scoring Game Equals a Road Win for SU Baseball

YORK, Pa. – A hard-hitting Susquehanna baseball team defeated York College 25-9 on the road Wednesday afternoon.

Pitcher Ryan Beckwith earned the win (1-0) but eight pitchers saw action for SU alone. Matt Cassinelli went 4-4 at the plate with five RBI's and one run. Tom Giaimo went 3-4 with two runs scored while Zach Leone and Tom Shields went 2-3 with one RBI and two runs each.

Susquehanna out-hit York 24-10 while only committing two errors to the Spartans' six.

York (5-11) scored two runs in the first inning and Susquehanna (6-6) answered with two of its own to briefly tie the game at two. Dylan Jenkins started the second inning with a double and was followed by Matt Cassinelli who doubled to score Jenkins. Dylan Glassmire scored Cassinelli on a single down the right field line.

The Spartans scored four in the bottom of the second to take a 6-2 lead going in to the third. Four singles and two doubles in the fourth inning gave the Crusaders five runs to take the lead, 7-6. York scored one in the bottom of the inning to knot the game at seven.

Susquehanna answered with four more runs in the fifth inning on four hits to go up 11-7. In the seventh inning, the Crusaders loaded the bases and Leone scored on a wild pitch to increase SU's lead to five (12-7). This was followed with a Matt Cassinelli bases-clearing double to score two more to go up 14-7.

York scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to five (14-9) but with five hits and four runs – to take an 18-9 lead – put the game out of reach for the Spartans. The Crusaders went on to score seven more runs in the ninth inning to win 25-9.

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, March 19 when the team hosts Drew University in a Landmark Conference doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
