SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Twelve hits drove the SU baseball team past Elizabethtown as the Crusaders won the Landmark Conference Championship series opener 4-2.
Nathan Madden (4-2) pitched a nine-inning, complete game to earn the win while striking out five and only allowing two runs – none earned – on six hits.
Zach Leone led the offense going 3-4 while Dylan Jenkins and Taylor Luckenbill went 2-3 with Luckenbill picking up one RBI, one double and one run scored. Five different players picked up SU's remaining five hits with both Dylan Glassmire and Bryan Palsi contributing doubles.
The Crusaders (27-14) scored in the bottom of the first inning when Jenkins was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to take the 1-0 lead.
The Blue Jays (25-19) answered in the top of the second with a run of their own to tie the game. However, SU took the lead (2-1) in its half of the inning when Justin Cassinelli hit a sacrifice fly that scored Glassmire.
Elizabethtown knotted the game at two in the top of the fifth but a two-run sixth inning put Susquehanna on top for the remainder of the game. Luckenbill knocked a double to left field to score Palsi while Danny Gordon followed with a single up the middle that plated Luckenbill to give SU the 4-2 lead.
Neither team scored for the remainder of the game as SU won 4-2. Madden ended the game by forcing a groundout, a pop-up and a lineout to earn the complete game win.
Game two of the Landmark Conference Championship Series will be Saturday, May 14 at 4:00 p.m.
