Baseball Falls Twice at Drew

Cory Fallon hit his eighth home run of the season and Cole Luzins added his third long ball of the year for the Susquehanna University Baseball team but it was not enough as Drew University won both games of the Landmark Conference doubleheader Saturday with 4-2 and 3-1 wins in Madison, N.J.

Susquehanna (20-16, 11-6) dropped to third place in the Landmark standings with just one game remaining on its conference schedule. Despite the losses Saturday, the River Hawks clinched a spot in the Landmark Conference Tournament with Moravian losing a game to Scranton on Saturday. The worst the River Hawks could finish would be in a tie with Moravian for the final playoff spot and Susquehanna holds the first tie breaker over Moravian having won two-of-three games in the regular season series.

On Saturday against Drew (24-11, 10-4), Fallon led off the second inning with a solo shot to make it a 1-0 Susquehanna lead.

The Rangers answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning and added a third run in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

Zach Leone connected on a sacrifice fly in the fifth as Danny Gordon scored from third to trim the lead to 3-2 but Drew added an insurance run in the sixth to seal the win.

In game two, Drew took the early lead with two runs in the second inning but Luzins connected on a one-out solo home run in the fourth to cut the lead in half.

The Rangers regained the two-run advantage in the bottom half of the inning and held on for the 3-1 win despite the River Hawks putting runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings.

In game two, Leone and Taylor Luckenbill were each 2-for-3.

The teams will close out the three-game series with a nine-inning game Sunday at Drew.
