SELINSGROVE, Pa. – On Sunday, Oct. 7, members of the Susquehanna University community took part in a charity swim-off, SAAC Saves the Girls: Drown-Out Cancer. Susquehanna's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) organized the event which raised over $1,500 in donations for the American Cancer Society.
Teams registered with the goal of raising $15 per team member and competed in half-hour timeslots against the other registered teams to see which team could swim the most combined laps. In total, all the participating teams swam 2,807 lengths of the pool or more than 42 miles.
Many of the competing teams consisted of members of various athletics teams including the field hockey, cross country, cheerleading and women's and men's swim teams. In addition, members from the entire SU community, not just athletics, took part in the fundraising event. Prizes were given out to teams with the highest lap totals.
The goals of SAAC are to promote unity between teams, encourage participation at athletics events, recognize athletes and organize various community service projects and events.
