Susquehanna drops heartbreaker, 2-1 to Alvernia
SELINSGROVE, Pa – Sophomore Courtney Salsman (Selinsgrove,
Pa./Selinsgrove) scored Susquehanna's only goal with 2:04 remaining
in the second half to tie the game. However, Alvernia's Shayna
Clark shot the game-winning goal 5:29 into overtime.
The game was Susquehanna field hockey's season opener at Sassafras
Field.
Alvernia's Janelle Lynch scored the first goal of the game
unassisted 5:51 into the second half. Salsman responded with 2:04
left in the second half to tie the game, with an assist from Andrea
Fiori (West Trenton, N.J./Lawrenceville School), forcing
overtime.
In overtime, Clark scored the game-winning goal as she dove for the
ball and knocked it in. She was assisted by Leslie Michael.
Although the score was close, Alvernia dominated the game with 25
shots to Susquehanna's 12. Susquehanna goalkeeper senior Lyndsay
Meabon (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) recorded 15 saves while Alvernia's
Audrey Hoffman saved seven.
Susquehanna continues its season on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at home
against Montclair State at 7 p.m.
