Field Hockey Drops First Game of the Season
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – A week-long layoff for the Susquehanna field hockey team ended on Sunday afternoon but the result was a 3-1 home loss to St. John Fisher.
The Crusaders (2-1) certainly had their chances, taking 21 shots to the Cardinals' 11, but capitalized on just one of those shots. SU also held a 13-4 edge in penalty corners.
Danielle Waleko (Wainscott, N.Y./East Hampton) led all players with her six-shot performance, followed by four from Ally Bradley (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South).
The Cardinals' Marisa Vedella netted the first goal of the game, and her team's first of the season, just 6:16 into the game. For the next 25-plus minutes that remained the only score until, with 2:40 to play in the half, Rebecca Marion (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) collected a rebounded shot off the stick of Claire Keenan (Piscatway, N.J./Piscatway) and put it past St. John Fisher goalie Kellie Redmond to knot the game at one-all.
Just like the opening half, it took St. John Fisher (1-2) little time to put the ball in the back of this cage, this time when Caitlin Allen fired a pass from Taylor Parker past goalie Margaret Ruth (Lewisberry, Pa./Northern) for a 2-1 Cardinals' lead at the 31:41 mark.
With just 7:23 left, Parker and Allen teamed up again, this time with Parker scoring the goal on a pass from Allen to give the Cardinals a two-goal cushion (3-1).
The Crusaders conclude their four-game homestand on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game against Lebanon Valley.
