SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna field hockey team dropped a one-goal, 3-2 decision to visiting Kean University in the championship game of the Crusaders' third-annual Connie Harnum Classic.
The game was tied until 5:30 remaining in the second half when the Cougars' (2-0) Bridgette Bottinelli scored an unassisted goal that proved to be the game winner.
The teams were evenly matched in nearly every statistical category. Both squads took 15 shots with SU (1-1) putting nine on goal. The game also saw a combined 33 penalty corners.
Crusader goalie Morgan Ludlam (Middeltown, Del./Appoquinimink) had a solid game in the cage with eight saves in her first career start. Meanwhile, Brodie Ercole (Oakmont, Pa./Lewisburg Area) and Lauren Cram (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) accounted for the team's offense in the game with one goal apiece.
Kean jumped out to a 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals by Krista LaMaina within the first 15:53 of the game. Susquehanna countered, though, with two unanswered goals of its own. Ercole made it a one-goal game with a score at the 23:49 mark of the first half and 11 minutes later Cram scored her first goal of the season to knot the game at two.
Each squad had ample scoring opportunities in the second half but for nearly 30 minutes none of those opportunities translated into goals. That changed, however, when Bottinelli found the back of the cage for a 3-2 Kean lead, which remained the final score.
The Crusaders hit the road for the first time this season with a 4 p.m. game at Gwynedd Mercy on Sept. 3.
