SELINSGROVE, Pa. – A narrow halftime advantage quickly turned into a dominant lead for the Susquehanna men's basketball as the Crusaders took down visiting Landmark Conference opponent Drew 72-46 on Saturday afternoon.
Junior center Harley Sellinger (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain), in only his third game this season, led SU (5-8, 1-1) with 12 points while adding four rebounds. Freshman Tre Dean was just behind him with 10 points and seven boards. Mike Perillo (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) also added a game-high nine assists to complement his nine points.
As a team the Crusaders out-rebounded the Rangers (5-7, 0-2) by a 44-37 margin and committed only 11 turnovers to Drew's 16. As a result, SU had 19 points off turnovers while the Rangers managed only eight all game.
The largest lead of the first half was six points, which SU held twice. A Dean layup made it 15-9 at the 9:29 mark and just over one minute later Sellinger added a layup to keep his squad ahead by six (17-11).
With 5:33 left in the first half, Drew's Steve Hydzik tied it at 17 and the Rangers went on to go up by four (21-17) with just over four minutes left. Susquehanna was able to end the half on 7-0 run, though, to take a 24-21 into the locker room at halftime.
The second half was all SU as the team pulled ahead by 10 (33-23) thanks to a 9-2 run to open the period. The Rangers never pulled any closer than six points for the remainder of the afternoon and with 6:16 to play, Drew found itself down by 25 points (63-38) after a Sellinger free throw.
An E.J. Duncan (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pope John XIII Regional) layup off the bench gave his team a game-high 29-point advantage (72-43) with just 56 ticks on the clock to ice the game.
The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday when they travel to conference opponent Goucher for a 7:30 p.m. game.
