Catching Up With...Tony Seldon

Name: Tony Seldon
Sport: Men’s Basketball
Class: Sophomore
Major: Communications - Broadcasting
Birthday: May 8, 1993

Why did you choose your major?

I chose my major because I wanted to study something I loved, as well as something I viewed as being extremely important to the success of my career. So I combined my passion for sports broadcasting with communications as being arguably one of the most important aspects of becoming successful in life.

What has been your favorite class so far?

My favorite class so far has been Communication Media Theory. It was an interesting course that took an in-depth look at the theories of the ways we communicate and why we communicate the ways we do.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation I plan to continue to play basketball professionally, and following that make my way to becoming a basketball analyst or begin my coaching career at the high school level.

What is your favorite athletic memory as a Crusader?

My favorite athletic memory so far as a Crusader is definitely our win against Catholic last season that ensured us a spot in the Conference Tournament. Only being a freshman at the time, it really showed me the difference between high school and college in terms of school pride. The atmosphere and the support our classmates showed was absolutely incredible.

What is your go-to song to get pumped up for competition?

My go-to song for games isn’t necessarily a song but it’s a motivational speech called “How Bad Do You Want It?” It talks about doing whatever it takes to succeed, and the man who gives the speech is very enthusiastic, so it really hypes me up before a game.

What is your nickname on your team?

Most of my teammates call me Tone or Tony Tone, and sometimes they call me by whatever my name on Twitter is, right now it’s Triple Deuce which came from my jersey number, 32, so I get that here and there.

The most embarrassing thing that’s happened to me on the court is….

I haven’t had anything embarrassing happen yet, hope it stays that way, haha.

The best part about road trips with my team is…

The best part about road trips with the team are definitely the pre-game meals. Our coaches always make sure we eat at quality restaurants and we always have great conversation filled with a lot of laughs.

What advice do you have for a prospective SU student-athlete?

I would advise a prospective SU student-athlete to ensure that you manage your time well. Being a collegiate athlete requires great dedication but academics are what are most important. So maintaining an equal balance of hard work in both arrears is essential to success.

What are your goals for the upcoming season, both individually and as a team?

As a team we have one main goal and that’s winning our Conference Championship to earn a bid in the NCAA tournament. My personal goal is to do everything in my power to ensure that our team goal is achieved.

My favorite midnight snack is…

Oreos and Milk

If you could meet anyone, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

If I could meet anyone dead or alive it would be have to be Magic Johnson. Not only is he one of the best basketball players to ever live, but he also has done so much for the growth of so many young people and has impacted the world outside of basketball, all while continuing to fight HIV. This remarkable willpower and selflessness is something I would love to learn from him.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I would love to travel to the Bahamas; my parents have been and told me stories about how perfect it is and since then it’s always been a dream of mine to visit there.

Do you have any unique talents/hobbies?

I whistle all the time so I’ve gotten pretty good at whistling songs.

What was your biggest high school achievement?

My biggest high school achievement, aside from graduating, would have to be playing in the Connecticut Class L State Championship game my senior year, in front of about 10,000 people. Although we lost, we finished second in the state and made our first State Championship appearance since 2004.

Something people may not know about me is…

I love to draw.
