Crusader Men Take Down Goucher in Landmark Play

Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's basketball not only picked up its first Landmark Conference win of the season with an 88-77 home win over Goucher on Wednesday night, the Crusaders also dealt the Gophers their first conference loss of the season.

Four players netted at least 12 points for SU (9-5, 1-2), including a double-double from Harley Sellinger (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) who poured in 14 points and had a game-high 17 boards. Brandon Hedley (Silver Spring, Md./Salisbury Prep) led Susquehanna with 23 points while Steven Weidlich (Watchung, N.J./Watchung Hills) finished with 22 points, five rebounds and four assists. Jake Eskin (Germantown, Md./Churchill) picked up 12 points and five assists in his 33 minutes of action. Tre Dean (Dallas, Texas/Greenhill School) tied for the game high with seven assists off the bench.

As a team, the Crusaders shot nearly 51 percent from the floor and drained 12 of 27 three-point attempts for a 44 percent clip.

Susquehanna never trailed in the game and Hedley got the scoring started with a trey less than 20 seconds into the game. Goucher (7-7, 2-1) countered with a three of its own at the 18:19 mark to tie the game, the last time the game would be tied.

SU went up by seven, 13-6, on an Eskin three-point play and quickly built that lead to 20 (26-6) courtesy of a Matt McGugan (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) free throw at the 9:59 mark.

It was a game-high 23 point Susquehanna lead after Dean's jumper with 5:42 to play in the opening half. Thanks to a Sellinger layup at the buzzer, SU was able to take a 21-point (50-29) lead into halftime.

It remained a 20-point Crusader lead (65-45) six minutes into the second-half action after a Weidlich trey with 14:08 remaining. McGugan sank a three of his own less than two minutes later to preserve a 21-point lead at 68-47.

Goucher, however, was able to pull within 14 at the 8:43 mark of the half but with 1:18 to play, the Gophers found themselves back down by 17 (87-70).  Susquehanna's lead was large enough, though, to withstand a 7-0 run by Goucher that ended the half and SU went on to win by a final score of 88-77.

Susquehanna remains at home to host Landmark Conference opponent USMMA on Saturday at 2 p.m.
