SCRANTON, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's basketball team was making its first Landmark Conference championship game appearance since 2009 but Saturday's final against Scranton did not go the way of the Crusaders as they fell 71-56 on Saturday afternoon.
Brandon Hedley (Silver Spring, Md./Salisbury Prep) led the team with 23 points on 9-of-25 shooting. Senior Harley Sellinger (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) capped off his collegiate career with a double-double in the form of 14 points and 12 rebounds, six of the offensive variety.
As a team, SU (17-10) shot 30.5 percent for the game and just 61.5 percent at the free throw line. Scranton (24-3), meanwhile, had three players in double figures, shot 46.4 percent from the floor and sank 33 percent of its three-point attempts.
The Crusaders held an early 4-2 lead after a Jake Eskin (Germantown, Md./Churchill) layup just 64 seconds into the game and Sellinger's jumper two minutes later kept the game tied at six. Scranton went ahead on its very next possession, though, and led for the remainder of the game.
It was 13-10 in favor of Scranton at the 12:22 mark of the half and the Royals took their first double-digit lead of the game, 25-14, on a Michael Barr trey with 6:57 to play in the half. By the time the half ended, Scranton held a 38-25 lead.
Midway through the second half, a Hedley layup made it a 13-point game (51-38) and two Sellinger free throws with 9:36 on the clock trimmed Scranton's lead to 11 (51-40). Hedley's jumper one minute later cut Scranton's lead to single digits at 51-42 but nine unanswered points by the Royals made it 60-42 with 4:51 to play.
Evan Austin (Knoxville, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep) drained a three with 1:11 on the clock for a 71-55 game but that marked the Crusaders' final points of the game as they ultimately fell 71-56.
