KING’S, Pa. – The Susquehanna men’s basketball was back in action on Saturday for the first time since Dec. 7 as the Crusaders traveled to the Monarch Classic, hosted by King’s College. In the opening game of the tournament, SU took down the host Monarchs 73-67 to move to 4-3 on the season.
Three players reached double digits in the win, led by Steven Weidlich’s (Watchung, N.J./Watchung Hills) 21, nine of which came from beyond the arc. Brandon Hedley (Silver Spring, Md./Salisbury Prep) chipped in 19 points while Harley Sellinger (Mill Hall, Pa./Central Mountain) had 18 to go along with five rebounds.
Susquehanna found itself at the free throw line 40 times in the game and sank 33 percent of its shots for an 82.5 percent clip. The Crusaders also shot for a 44.4 percent effort from three-point range while King’s (4-4) made only 20 percent of its three-point shots.
SU did not trail once over the 40 minutes of action and opened the game on a 5-1 run. The Monarchs were able to tie the game at seven before the Crusaders went on a 12-2 run to go up by 10 with12:16 on the clock.
King’s was able to make it a one-point game (19-18) but pulled no closer over the remaining 10:32 of the half. By the time the period ended Susquehanna found itself up by four, 34-30.
Just 25 seconds into the second half, King’s managed to again knot the game, this time at 34-all. However, seven unanswered Crusader points, five of which came from Sellinger, made it a41-34 Susquehanna lead.
With 12:52 left to play, SU went back up by double digits, 52-40, courtesy of a Weidlich three-pointer. King’s was able to largely keep the leader under 10 points and the Monarchs found themselves down by only three (65-62) at the two-minute mark.
Unfortunately for King’s, the Crusaders sank five free throws over the final 33 seconds to put the game out of reach.
Susquehanna will now face Wilkes on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the final day of the Monarch Classic.
