Road Win for Men's Hoops

KING'S POINT, N.Y. – The Susquehanna men's basketball team completed the regular season sweep of USMMA with an 82-67 road win against the Mariners (2-11, 0-7) on Saturday evening.

SU (10-4, 3-2) led for all but the first 90 seconds of the game en route to the Crusaders' fourth win in the past five games. Susquehanna drained 14 threes in the win and shot fifty percent both from the floor and from three-point range.

Brandon Hedley (Silver Spring, Md./Salisbury Prep) accounted for six of those treys as he went 6-for-11 from beyond the arc and finished with 24 points, three rebounds and a game-high six assists. Josh Miller (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter Strasburg) tallied 17 points, nine of which were from three-point range, while also pulling down a team-best seven rebounds.

Steven Weidlich (Watchung, N.J./Watchung Hills) was the third SU player in double figures with his 13 point, three rebound and three assist performance.

Susquehanna dominated in the paint with 28 points to the Mariners' 18.

After falling behind 2-0, SU scored the next five points with Weidlich's three at the 17:57 mark giving SU its first lead of the game, 5-2. Back-to-back jumpers from Matt McGugan (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) and Hedley made it an 11-4 Susquehanna lead after less than four minutes of play.

Weidlich's jumper put the Crusaders ahead by double-digits for the first time in the game (17-6) and Miller's three with 13:04 to play capped off an 8-0 Susquehanna stretch that made it 22-6 at the 13-minute mark.

Hedley continued the run of threes with back-to-back treys to make it 30-10 just after the midway point of the half.

The Mariners trimmed that lead to 12 (32-20) after a 10-2 run that burned three minutes off the clock but seven unanswered Crusader points brought the lead back to 19, 39-20, with 4:17 to play.

USMMA, however, closed out the half by scoring 10 of the final 12 points to go into halftime down by 11, 41-30.

That momentum was quickly erased when Susquehanna opened the second half on a 10-0 run that made it 51-30 after three minutes of play. The Mariners followed with seven straight points of their own, though, for a 51-37 ballgame at the 15:25 mark.

Weidlich snapped the scoring streak with a three and by the 12:10 mark of the half, the SU lead was back to 21, 61-40. Connor Mailen's (Taylor, Pa./Riverside) layup with 9:55 to play upped the Susquehanna edge to 23, 64-41, and another three from Weidlich made it a 25-point game (69-44) with 7:55 remaining.

By the three-minute mark of the half, Susquehanna held a 76-54 advantage and the Crusaders held off USMMA to secure the win.
