Crusader Men Edge Goucher in Fourth Straight Win

TOWSON, Md. – It may have been closer than the team would have preferred, but the Susquehanna men's basketball squad still managed to extend their win streak to four with an 86-82 win at Goucher on Wednesday night.

The Crusaders  maintained a slim, four-point lead at halftime and hung on to that four-point edge to improve to 13-4 overall and 6-2 in Landmark play.

A combined three free throws from Brandon Hedley (Silver Spring, Md./Salisbury Prep) and Josh Miller (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter Strasburg) over the final nine seconds of regulation officially clinched the win for SU.

Three pointers helped keep Susquehanna in the game as they sank 11 of their 29 attempts for a 38 percent clip with Hedley scoring 12 of his game-high 22 points on treys. The jurnio now has 975 career points. Steven Weidlich (Watchung, N.J./Watchung Hills) added 17 points, nine of which were from beyond the arc, and also went 6-for-6 at the charity stripe.

Matt McGugan (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) and Miller scored 15 and 11 points, respectively, with Miller pulling down eight boards.

Neither team held more than a nine-point advantage at any point in the game. The Gophers (3-14, 2-6) led 10-6 four minutes into the opening half before a Weidlich three with 15:42 on the clock swung the lead in SU's favor (11-10).

Miller's jumper two minutes later tied the game at 15 but at the midway point of the period, Susquehanna found itself down by two, 23-21, despite a McGugan jumper with 10:08 on the clock.

That bucket was part of an 11-0 Crusader run that handed them a 30-23 edge with 8:31 left. Hedley's three-pointer just over four minutes later helped his team maintain a four-point lead, 39-35, and Miller's free throw with just 1:22 remaining made it a nine-point game (48-39) which would ultimately stand as SU's largest lead of the game.

The half ended on a high note for the Gophers, though, who scored seven of the final nine points to close the gap to four (50-46) at the midway point.

The second half was much of the same with neither team able to pull away. Goucher's Chris Outing tied the game at 52 just two minutes into the action before five unanswered Susquehanna points made it 57-52 in favor of SU.

With 10:38 left in the game, Tucker Canary's three trimmed the Crusaders' lead to one, 64-63, but Jason Dietrich (Maytown, Pa./Kutztown University) countered with a trey of his own for a 67-63 game just inside the 10-minute mark.

The teams found themselves tied at 69 with 8:11 remaining before a 7-0 stretch by SU gave the team a seven-point cushion (76-69) with just under six minutes to play.

Goucher cut the lead to four, 84-80, on a Trey Galloway III layup but with just five seconds remaining, the Gophers were forced to foul and Weidlich connected on both free throws to seal the game.

The Crusaders remain on the road to face Elizabethtown on Saturday, Jan. 24. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
