Home-Opening Win for SU Men's Hoops

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – A 97-point performance guided the Susquehanna men's basketball team to a decisive 97-73 win over visiting Penn State – Wilkes Barre on the opening day of SU's annual Pepsi Tip-Off Tournament.

The Crusaders (2-0) will face King's College in the championship game on Saturday at 3 p.m.; the Monarchs defeated Davis College in the opening game of the evening.

Three players finished in double figures for the Crusaders, led by Steven Weidlich's 14-point effort in just 17 minutes of action. Dan Weiss had 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds while Josh Miller scored 11 points. Tyler Hoagland led all players with seven assists to go along with seven points and two rebounds.

The team shot better than 47 percent from the floor while Penn State shot 38 percent and had only 28 rebounds to SU's 53.

Susquehanna trailed 6-3 after Penn State sank back-to-back threes but Weiss's layup at the 18-minute mark put SU ahead 7-6 and it was a lead the team would not relinquish. Five minutes later, Weidlich converted on a three-point play to make it 15-10 and the Crusaders took their first double-digit lead when Dalton Reichard's three with 7:46 remaining put Susquehanna ahead 26-16.

That was part of a 14-0 SU run that made it a 19-point game (35-16) with 5:27 still to play in the half.

SU's defense held Penn State to just three points in the final 3:37 of the half and the Crusaders took a 49-23 lead into halftime.

Susquehanna took a game-high 31-point advantage (68-37) on Ryan Traub's free throw at the 12:56 mark. It was not until 3:02 remained that Penn State was able to trim the lead under 20 (89-70) and SU went on to the 97-73 victory.
