KING'S POINT, N.Y. – The Susquehanna men's basketball team remains undefeated after a road win at the United States Merchant Marine Academy Saturday afternoon.
The Crusaders (7-0, 2-0) continue their win streak with a 64-61 defeat of the Mariners (3-3, 0-2).
SU held a lead just once in the first half. The score was tied four times in the half with Susquehanna coming out on top once on a made free throw from Steven Weidlich made it 10-9 at the 15:57 mark.
Merchant Marine answered with a three-pointer to take the lead (12-10) and it would be a lead they would hold until a last second layup from Brandon Hedley tied the game at 33 going into halftime.
In the second half, the game was tied four times with seven lead changes before Susquehanna ultimately came out on top 64-61. With the game knotted at 42-42 before Hedley made a jumper off of an assist from Jason Dietrich to give SU the lead 44-42.
USMMA tied it at 44 all and a made layup for Danny Weiss gave the Crusaders the lead once again. However, a three-point play – a jump-shot followed by a made free throw – gave the Mariners the lead until Weiss scored two free throws to tie the game at 61 with 2:11 remaining in the game.
The Mariners turned to fouling but the Crusaders made three of their six free throws in the last two minutes while USMMA missed its last five shots of the game for Susquehanna to take the win.
Weidlich led SU with 26 points – 11-of-13 at the line – and six rebounds while Weiss finished the game with a double-double scoring 15 points and collecting 10 boards.
Susquehanna returns to action on Friday, Dec. 11 when the team travels to King's College to participate in the First National Community Bank/Monarch Classic. The first game is against Trinity (Conn.) at 6:00 p.m.
