SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The No. 17 Susquehanna men's basketball team celebrated Senior Day by defeating the Rangers of Drew University 86-60 in front of a packed Houts Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. With today's win the Crusaders clinched a spot in the Landmark Conference Championships.
The Crusaders were led by senior Josh Miller who recorded a double-double and led all players in both points and rebounds with 27 and 13, respectively. Fellow senior Brandon Hedley followed with 24 points – 18 of which were from three-point range – while Steven Weidlich totaled 10 points and Danny Weiss tallied nine points and nine rebounds.
Susquehanna shot 45.5 percent from the floor, 42.4 percent from behind the arc and 94.1 percent at the free throw line. SU's defense held the Rangers to 32.3 percent and 16.6 percent from the floor and three-point range.
The Rangers (10-14, 7-8) took an early 8-2 lead at the 17:02 mark in the first half. The Crusaders (19-3, 10-3) fought back and tied it at 10 on a Weidlich three-pointer with 13:38 on the clock. A trey from Miller gave SU its first lead of the day (13-12) at the 12:47 mark and two free throws from Traub extended the lead to three (15-12) 42 seconds later.
A Drew three-pointer tied the game at 15 with 11:40 to play and another pair of free throws from Ryan Traub gave Susquehanna the lead (17-15) with 10:33 on the clock. The game was tied for the third time 14 seconds later (17) on a Ranger's layup.
Neither team scored for just over two minutes before the Crusaders took the lead (20-17) off a Hedley trey at the 8:08 mark. From this point SU went on an 11-4 run to take its first double digit lead of the game (31-21) with 4:35 on the clock.
At the 2:04 mark, the Rangers cut the lead to two but Miller scored the last nine points of the half to go into the locker room up by 11 (42-31).
Just over five minutes into the second half, the Crusaders increased their lead to 18 (53-35) on a Hedley three-pointer. A pair of free throws from Drew's Jonathan Alegrezza brought the Rangers to within 16 (53-37) at the 13:22 mark but SU went on a 9-3 run to give them the team a 21-point lead (61-40) with 11:31 remaining in the game.
The Rangers got within 17 (66-48) at the 9:18 mark but a jumper followed by a three-pointer from Hedley pushed the lead to 22 with 6:06 on the clock and SU never looked back, winning by 26 points (86-60).
Susquehanna returns to action on Monday, Feb. 15 as the team hosts Elizabethtown in a 6:00 p.m. make-up Landmark Conference game.
