Seniors Steven Weidlich, Dalton Reichard, Danny Weiss and Jason Dietrich combined for 49 points to lead the Susquehanna Men's Basketball team to a convincing 71-59 victory over Juniata College Wednesday night in a Landmark Conference matchup in Huntingdon, Pa.
Susquehanna (14-2 overall, 4-1 Landmark), ranked No. 14 in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, used an early run to take a quick lead and held a 45-22 advantage at the half. Juniata (9-7, 1-4) trimmed the lead early in the second half but the River Hawks regained control and cruised to the victory.
Weidlich led the Susquehanna seniors with 19 points while Reichard added 12, Weiss 10 and Dietrich eight points for the River Hawks.
Dietrich made a pair of early free throws to break a 2-2 tie and spark a 23-8 run as Susquehanna built and early double-digit lead with a 25-10 advantage 11 and a half minutes into the contest.
The River Hawks added to the lead with a 9-0 run during a three-minute span later in the half.
In the second half, Juniata trimmed the lead all the way down to eight points at 63-55 with 4:49 left to play but a Weidlich 3-pointer stopped the momentum.
After two more lay ups for the Eagles made it a seven-point game with 2:29 left, Dietrich drained a 3-pointer to regain the 10-point advantage and the River Hawks made 5-of-6 free throws in the closing seconds to seal the victory.
Ryan Traub scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds while Dietrich and Reichard had eight and seven rebounds respectively to lead Susquehanna.
The road victory started a four-game stretch of games on the road for the River Hawks as the team travels to Drew for a 4 p.m. Saturday matchup before playing at Catholic and Moravian next week.
