The Susquehanna University Men's Basketball team jumped out to an early 15-2 lead Wednesday night in Scranton but the Royals used a late run to tie the game and eventually pull ahead to take a 75-66 victory in a Landmark Conference game in Scranton.
Susquehanna (20-4 Overall, 10-3 Landmark) controlled the game early on with the 15-2 lead in the opening minutes and held a 37-28 lead at the break. Scranton (18-6, 10-3) rallied for 47 second-half points as the Royals chipped away at the lead eventually tying the game at 58-58 with 5:35 left to play.
After a Steven Weidlich 3-pointer gave the River Hawks a 58-52 lead at the 6:22 mark, Scranton went on an 8-0 run to take the lead at 60-58.
Ryan Traub, who finished with 14 points, hit a layup to tie the score and the teams traded baskets over the next few minutes. After a Danny Weiss layup gave the River Hawks a 62-61 edge, Scranton rattled off seven consecutive points to pull ahead 68-62 with 1:10 left to play.
Scranton connected on 7-of-8 free throws in the closing minute to prevent a Susquehanna comeback.
Weidlich led the River Hawks with 18 points while Truab and Jason Dietrich each scored 14. Traub led the team with 10 rebounds and Dietrich was right behind with nine. Tyler Hoagland led the River Hawks with six assists.
The Royals, River Hawks and Moravian are now tied for the lead in the Landmark Conference standings. Susquehanna finishes the season at Elizabethtown and Scranton hosts Goucher and Moravian hosts Catholic on the final day of the regular season Saturday.
