MOOSIC, Pa. -- The Susquehanna University men's golf team finished in first place out of nine squads at the Glenmaura National Collegiate Invitational, held at Glenmaura National Golf Club on April 25.
Using the scores of its top four players on the rainy and cold par-71, 6,308-yard course, Susquehanna registered a total of 300 to best the runners-up from The University of Scranton by 16 strokes. Moravian College finished in third place with a 319 total.
This event was originally scheduled for two days, but heavy rain on April 26 forced the April 25 results to be the final ones.
SU's senior Mitch Mercer (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) led the field of 45 players with a card of 73 to notch his fifth first-place finish this season.
Susquehanna's freshman Pat Wilson (Andover, N.J./Newton) and junior Ryan Redfern (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) tied for second place with identical 74 scores.
Sophomore Kevin Willett (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) rounded out the Crusaders' card with a 79, good for a 10th-place tie.
SU, the 2009-10 Empire 8 Athletic Conference team champion, will wait to see if it earns an invitation to this season's NCAA Division III championships. Susquehanna can qualify individuals for the NCAA championships as well (such as top-performer and Empire 8 Player of the Year Mercer). An announcement is pending for those individuals as well.
**UPDATE: Mercer has been selected to represent Susquehanna as an individual.
Next Event: Tuesday-Friday, May 11-14, at NCAA Division III championships (Hershey Country Club-East Course and Hershey Links; Hershey, Pa.)
