DANIELSVILLE, Pa. – A rain-shortened day one of the Empire 8 men’s golf championship saw the Susquehanna men’s golf team stand in fourth place with a team score of 164 through nine holes.

Rounds one and two of the championships were played in the fall, with rounds three and four taking place on Saturday and Sunday in Danielsville, Pa. Through Saturday’s nine holes, SU’s team score of 164 placed the squad nine shots off the leader, St. John Fisher College (155).

Including the fall’s opening two rounds, the Crusaders have a team total of 799. Also including the fall rounds, St. John Fisher has a team score of 772 and maintains the overall lead by seven shots over Moravian (779).

Freshman Steve Welkie (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) was one shot off the top score through nine holes, shooting a 39. Four other players shot a 38. Combined with his 75 and 79 in rounds one and two, respectively, Welkie boasts a score of 193 and stands just two shots off the lead which sees a three-way tie for first.

Also posting a solid day on Saturday was Ryan Redfern (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell), who shot a 42 and including his fall rounds has shot a 201, leaving him 10 shots off the lead.

Sunday’s tee times have now been moved up two hours in order to play the remaining 27 holes.
