Welkie Named Empire 8 Golf Rookie of the Year

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Susquehanna golfer Stephen Welkie (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) was named the Empire 8 Men’s Golf Rookie of the Year on Monday afternoon. The honor also earned him a spot on the First Team while teammate Ryan Redfern (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell), a senior, was named to the Second Team.

Welkie becomes the second-straight Crusader to earn a major award from the conference as Mitch Mercer ’10 was named the Player of the Year last spring. Welkie finished fourth overall at last weekend’s Empire 8 Championship with a four-round total of 313, the top freshman score. His lowest score came on the first round of the championship, played in the fall, as he shot a 75. Welkie proceeded to shoot a 79, 79 and 80 over the final three rounds to take the fourth overall spot.

Redfern, meanwhile, also earned a top-10 finish at the championship, shooting a four-round score of 321 to tie for ninth overall. He put together a round-one score of 78, his lowest of all four rounds, and used a 79 on the final day to clinch the top-10 finish.

The Crusaders, under the direction of 2010 Empire 8 Golf Coach of the Year Don Harnum, entered the final day of the championship in fourth place and used a solid team effort to move up to third place overall with a four-round total of 1282.
