NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. -- Freshman Stephen Welkie (Allentown, Pa./Allenton Central Catholic) finished fifth overall out of 47 golfers at the first round of the 2010 Empire 8 championships, held at the Yahnudasis Golf  Club on Sept. 18-19.

Welkie finished with a two-day total of 154 (75, 79) on the par-71, 5,847-yard course.

Susquehanna shot a team score of 635 (317, 318) over the two days. Moravian College, who will host the second round of Empire 8 action in the spring, shot a team-best-tying 617. St. John Fisher College also shot a 617.

The other five Crusaders’ golfers were within six strokes of each other.

Junior Ryan Redfern (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) shot a 159 (78, 81), while freshman Dan Kinney (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) totaled 160 (83, 77)

Fellow juniors Kevin Willett (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood),  Adam Puskar (Whitehall, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) and Patrick DiMartino (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) shot a 162, 164 and 165, respectively. Willett shot 81’s on both days, Puskar posted an 83 and 81, and DiMartino fired a 84 and 81.
