Men’s Golf Places Fifth at Round One of Empire 8 Championships

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. – Susquehanna senior John Jaques (Easton, Pa. / Easton Area) finished 13th overall out of 48 golfers at the first round of the 2011 Empire 8 Championships, held at Yahnundasis Golf Club on Sept. 17-18. As a team, SU finished the weekend in fifth place.

Jaques finished with a two-day total of 154 (80, 74) on the par-71, 5,847-yard course.

The Crusaders shot a team score of 626 (311, 315) over the two days. St. John Fisher, who hosted this year’s fall event, shot a team-best 591.

Freshman Patrick Neal (Pylesville, Md. / North Harford) finished only two strokes behind Jaques with 156 (74, 82). Sophomore Stephen Welkie (Allentown, Pa. / Allentown Central Catholic) finished with 159 (80, 79).

Senior Kevin Willet (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) (78, 87), senior Patrick DiMartino (East Hanover, N.J. / Hanover Park) (79, 86), and freshman Kevin Phelan (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte County Day School) (85, 80) all finished with 165.
