William McCafferty shot a 7-over par 78 and finished tied for 27th place overall leading the Susquehanna University Men's Golf team to a season-opening 14th place finish as a team at the Elizabethtown Invitational Tuesday afternoon on the Hershey Country Club East Course in Hershey.
Susquehanna finished with a team score of 327, just 10 strokes out of a top-8 finish in the 28-team tournament. Stevenson and Muhlenberg tied for the team title with scores of 302. Lebanon Valley was five strokes back in third place followed by Gettysburg (310), Alvernia (312), Dickinson (313) and McDaniel (315). Eastern and Moravian tied for eighth with team scores of 317, DeSales (318) was 10th, Penn State Berks (319) was 11th while Marywood and Penn College tied for 12th with each scoring 322.
The River Hawks finished ahead of 14 other teams.
McCafferty scored a par on seven of the final eight holes in the back nine to finish strong with a 38 and had a total score of 78 with his 40 on the front nine. He finished tied with seven other golfers in 27th place out of the 138 golfers entered in the tournament.
Brendan Baloh and Steven Jumper rounded out the scoring for Susquehanna as each shot 85 to finish tied for 80th spot with 14-over par scores. Baloh finished his round strong with five pars on the last six holes and Jumper had one of the best starts of the tournament field with par-birdie-par on the first three holes.
The River Hawks will compete next at the Lebanon Valley Invitational September 25.
