SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna's men's lacrosse team fell to #26 Franklin & Marshall 9-8 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon.
SU (3-3) fell behind 1-0 at 10:53 in the first quarter but scored two goals towards the end of the period to take the lead 2-1 at the first intermission.
Tim Pastore (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) scored off a pass from Austen Lein (New Vernon, N.J. / Madison). Dustin Breakey (Mechanicsburg, Pa. /Cumberland Valley) followed by finding the back of the net with an assist from Pat Brogran (Lancaster, Pa. / Hempfield).
The Crusaders kept up the offensive pressure in the second quarter, with Luke Delavan (Madison, N.J. / Madison) scoring from a Breakey feed to put SU up 3-1. Less than two minutes later, Delavan notched another goal, this time assisted by Lein to increase the lead 4-1.
After the Diplomats (5-1) cut the lead to 4-2, Breakey ripped in a goal with an assist from Billy Spack (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) to go ahead 5-2 with 2:52 remaining in the opening half of play.
F & M scored with 33 ticks on the clock to trim the lead to 5-3, which the Crusaders held at halftime.
The Diplomats got within one (5-4) after scoring a man-up goal with 7:49 left in the third quarter. SU earned a man-up goal of their own off the stick of Delavan to go back ahead 6-4 at 2:20 in the third. F & M got on the board once more at 1:42 to trail 6-5 entering the final period.
F & M fired off three unanswered goals to open the fourth quarter and take the lead 8-6 with 8:23 remaining. But the Crusaders responded as Breakey tallied a goal with 8:11 left and Delavan ripped in the equalizer with 4:03 in regulation.
Unfortunately, F & M scored 2:33 into the extra session to win the game 9-8.
For SU, Delavan scored four times and Breakey had three goals. Lein finished with four helpers. Jordan Daney (Wynnewood, Pa. / Lower Merion) recorded 11 saves between the pipes for the Crusaders.
The Orange and Maroon are back in action on Saturday, as they host Drew to start Landmark Conference play at 2:30 p.m.
