SU Sinks the Mariners

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Susquehanna men's lacrosse team grabbed its first Landmark Conference win of the season with a 14-9 road victory against USMMA on an overcast Saturday afternoon.

SU (5-4, 1-1) out-scored the Mariners (3-5, 0-2) by a 9-5 margin in the second half after leading by just one (5-4) at halftime.

Tim Pastore (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and Pete Doelp (Essex Falls, N.J./West Essex) both had hat tricks along with two assists apiece. Austen Lein (New Vernon, N.J./Madison), Billy Spack (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) and Dustin Breakey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) all had two goals with Lein also chipping in two assists.

Goalie Jordan Daney (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) played all but the final 2:14 of the game, racking up 10 saves in the process.

Shots were nearly equal for each squad, with the Crusaders taking 33 to the Mariners' 30. SU did win 15 of 26 face-offs, however, and capitalized on five of their 12 extra-man opportunities.

Things certainly did not start out smoothly for Susquehanna as the team found itself in a 3-0 hole after less than four minutes of play. The team rallied to end the half with back-to-back scores from Doelp to cut the lead to 3-2 after 15 minutes of action.

SU continued that streak by scoring three unanswered goals in the second quarter and withstood a USMMA goal which marked the final scoring of the period to go into halftime up 5-4.

The second half was all Crusaders as they put up seven goals in the third quarter and ended the period on a run of six unanswered goals, including two from Breakey and two from Lein.

While the Mariners netted the first three goals of the fourth quarter to make it a 12-9 game with 8:03 to play, Pastore and Spack scored consecutive goals to put the game out of reach.

The Crusaders are back in action on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. game at Albright.
