SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's lacrosse team suffered its first home loss of the 2013 season, falling 13-4 to No. 29 Albright on Senior Day.
SU (10-6) fell into a 9-0 first-half deficit and could n0t recover despite out-scoring the Lions (13-3) 4-3 in the second half.
J.B. Montanye (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola) led the Crusaders with two goals while seniors John Kerrigan (Maple Glen, Pa./La Salle College HS) and Marcus Cheatham (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola) chipped in one goal apiece. Classmate Tylere Fritts (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) accounted for one of two SU assists.
Sophomore goalie Jared Knowlton (North Salem, N.Y./Kent School) played all but the final 2:04 of the game and finished with nine saves. Freshman Kade MacGregor (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) had four ground balls to go along with two caused turnovers.
Face-offs were problematic for Susquehanna as the team won just eight of 21 but the team did keep Albright from scoring on its one man-up opportunity of the afternoon.
The Lions scored two goals in the first quarter to take a modest, 2-0 lead heading into the second quarter. In that second quarter, however, Albright put seven goals on the board that put the Crusaders in a 9-0 halftime hole.
The Lions came out of halftime and took just 60 seconds to score their 10th goal of the game. However, less than a minute later Montanye responded with the team's – and his – first goal of the game. That goal marked a run of four unanswered Susquehanna goals that made it an 11-4 game with 11:50 still to play in the fourth quarter.
Unfortunately it also marked the end of the scoring for SU and Albright tacked on an insurance goal with 4:08 remaining to seal the 13-4 victory.
The Crusaders have already clinched the No. 3 seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament and will face No. 1 seed Scranton in a road semifinal game on Wednesday, May 1 at 4 p.m.
