Men’s Lax Picked Second in Preseason Poll

TOWSON, Md. – With the start of the 2014 men’s lacrosse season right around the corner, the Landmark Conference has announced its Preseason Poll and Susquehanna has been chosen to finish second this season.

The Crusaders, under seventh-year head coach Stewart Moan, received 37 points in the poll including two first-place votes. Goucher was picked to win the conference title with 42 points and three first-place votes. The poll was rounded out by USMMA in third (35 points, one first-place vote), Scranton (34), Drew (30, one-first place vote), Catholic (24) and Washington & Jefferson (15).

Susquehanna is coming off what was arguably the most successful season in program history as the Crusaders won their first-ever conference title with a 6-3 win against USMMA in the Landmark Conference championship game. SU subsequently earned its first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Among this year’s key returners from the 2013 championship team is senior Austen Lein (New Vernon, N.J/Madison), who led the team in scoring a year ago with 32 goals and 22 assists for 54 points. SU will undoubtedly miss All-America midfielder Marcus Cheatham ’13 as well as 2013 starting goalie Will Torrence ’13, but junior Jared Knowlton (North Salem, N.Y./Kent School) is expected to secure the starting goalkeeper job this spring after appearing in eight games in 2013.

The team opens the season at Lycoming on Feb. 22 for a 1 p.m. game.
