Offensive Outburst Leads SU Men’s Lax Past Drew

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Six first-period goals led way to an impressive offensive showing by Susquehanna men's lacrosse as the Crusaders defeated Drew 17-4 on Saturday afternoon in the Landmark Conference home opener.

SU (4-5, 1-0 Landmark) finished with a balanced scoring attack as senior Austen Lein (New Vernon, N.J. / Madison) and freshman Chet McLaughlin (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) both recorded hat tricks. Each player registered a game-high five points.

Nick Citron (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham), Ryan Buckley (Stony Brook, N.Y. / Ward Melville), Nick Reardon (West Deptford, N.J. / West Deptford) and Chris Minghenelli (Voorhees, N.J. / Eastern Regional) all registered two goals apiece. SU outshot Drew 41-24 on the afternoon.

Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Berg (Chester, N.J. / Mendham) earned his first career victory as the rookie finished with nine saves on 24 shots.

The Crusaders improve to 4-3 against Drew in Landmark play with Lein accounting for eight career goals against the Rangers.

The Orange & Maroon scored early and often on the visiting Rangers (3-4, 1-1 Landmark), as Jake Calder (Lutherville, Md. / Dulaney) notched a goal less than a minute into the game. Five different players would score in the period as SU jumped out to a 6-0 lead.

Drew finally broke through to begin the second period on a man-up goal at 14:34 and scored less than three minutes later to get within four (6-2). However, the Crusaders would score three goals in the next eight minutes, and went into halftime holding a comfortable 9-3 lead.

SU opened the second half with a goal from Lein at 11:55 in the third. The Rangers trimmed the lead to six (10-4) with a goal ten seconds later but three-consecutive goals by the Crusaders, including two from Minghenelli, put SU back on top 13-4.

The Crusaders scored four more times in the final period, including a man-up goal by Buckley at 7:54, to win the 2014 conference opener.
