Men’s Lacrosse Opens Season with a Victory

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Despite having its season opener delayed by three days, the Susquehanna men's lacrosse team opened its 2015 campaign with a win, defeating Muhlenberg 12-10 on Wednesday afternoon in Allentown.

The Crusaders (1-0) held off a late Muhlenberg rally to come away with the victory. Phil Lapone (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) led the SU offense with four goals and one assist while Nick Reardon (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) added two goals and two assists. In total, seven different Crusaders scored at least one goal for Susquehanna.

Goalie Jared Knowlton (North Salem, N.Y./Kent School) made 11 saves in his 60 minutes of work and the SU defense held the Mules (0-1) two just two first quarter goals and shut them out for the entire third quarter.

The Crusaders also came up big in extra-man opportunities, converting on four of their six chances.

SU jumped out to a 3-0 lead with 9:36 still play in the first quarter with all three goals coming from different players. Reardon made it a 4-1 Crusader advantage with three minutes remaining in that opening quarter and by the time the period came to a close, it stood 5-2 in favor of the Crusaders.

Muhlenberg opened the second quarter scoring with a goal just seven seconds into the action to make it 5-3 but three straight goals by the Crusaders – again from three different players – made it 9-4 at the 7:25 mark of the quarter.

The Mules, though, scored the final two goals of half to make it 9-6 after 30 minutes of action.

The SU offense responded by scoring the only three goals of the third quarter to go up by six (12-6) with just one quarter to play.

The fourth quarter, though, was all Muhlenberg. The Mules scored four goals in a nine-minute span to trim what had been a six-goal Crusader lead to just two (12-10) with 6:07 still to play. Fortunately, the SU defense shut out Muhlenberg for the remainder of the game to preserve the season-opening victory.

Susquehanna returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 28 with a 1 p.m. game at King's (Pa.).
