Crusader Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Messiah

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's lacrosse team rallied late in the first half against Messiah to tie the game at three but was shut out in the second half, falling 7-3 to the visiting Falcons.

The Crusaders (7-2) scored two goals in the final 90 seconds of the second quarter to come back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game at three but they were held without a goal for the final 30 minutes of the game.

Three different players scored for SU which was out-shot 33-25 by Messiah (5-3). Phil Lapone (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex) led the team with five shots and had one of those three goals.

Freshman goalie Sam Ash (Laurel, Del./Delmar) tallied nine saves in his 60 minutes of work.

Susquehanna's J.A. Howland (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) scored five minutes into the game for a 1-0 Crusader lead. The Falcons countered with two goals over a 75-second span to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Messiah continued its scoring streak with its third-straight goal just 90 seconds into the second quarter for a 3-1 game.

It remained 3-1 in favor of Messiah until, with 90 seconds left, Nick Kifolo (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) and Lapone scored within 30 seconds of each other to knot the game at three at the midway point of the game.

The game stood three-all for the first 10 minutes of the third quarter until Messiah's Tyler Goglio scored to put his team up 4-3.

The Falcons then scored the only three goals of the final quarter, including the final one with 31 seconds left to put the game out of reach for SU.

The Crusaders remain at home to host USMMA on Saturday, March 28 at noon.
