Overtime Victory Propels Men’s Lacrosse to Playoffs

SCRANTON, Pa. – Chet McLaughlin's (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) goal with 1:15 to play in overtime gave the Susquehanna men's lacrosse team an 8-7 victory at Scranton while also clinching a playoff spot for the Crusaders.

McLaughlin finished with two goals and two assists for a game-high four points. Carmen Raroha (Voorhees, N.J./Bishop Eustace) and Nick Reardon (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) each added one goal and one assist while Jake Calder (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) and Greg Rabiecki (Maplewood, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) finished with two goals apiece.

SU goalie Jared Knowlton (North Salem, N.Y./Kent School) recorded 13 saves in his nearly 63 minutes of action.

The Crusaders (11-3, 5-1) won 11-of-18 face-offs although the Royals (8-7, 4-2) finished with 32 shots to SU's 29.

McLaughlin netted the first goal of the game before the Royals went on a 3-0 run to go up 3-1. Raroha scored the final goal of the opening quarter, though, to pull his team within one (3-2).

Each team tallied a goal in the second quarter, allowing Scranton to maintain a one-goal lead, 4-3, at halftime.

It was the same story in the third as Scranton's Nick Mullery and SU's Calder accounted for the only two goals to make it 5-4 heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation.

The Crusader offense came out firing to start the fourth quarter, scoring three unanswered goals over a seven-plus minute span to take a 7-5 advantage. However, Scranton scored the final two goals of regulation, including the game-tying score with 27 seconds to play, to force overtime.

In that overtime period, McLaughlin struck with 1:15 remaining thanks to an assist from Reardon to send the Crusaders into the playoffs for the third-straight year.

Susquehanna returns home to host Catholic on April 25 at 2 p.m. on Senior Day for the Crusaders.
