SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Susquehanna men's lacrosse team dropped its Landmark Conference Season opener 10-7 against Elizabethtown at home Saturday afternoon.
It was a back-and-forth game with SU leading 3-2 at halftime but the Blue Jays used eight second-half goals to come away with the win.
Andrew Porzio led the Crusaders (6-2, 0-1) with two goals on two shots while five other SU players scored one goal each. Jack Donnelly totaled two of the team's five assists and Jake Purnell led the team in ground balls with four. Goalie Dylan Abplanalp (6-2) made 12 saves on 22 shots on goal.
Adam Fox scored the first goal for the Crusaders with 8:54 on the clock to give SU a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, Elizabethtown (5-3, 1-0) scored a goal of its own to tie the game at one. With 1:48 remaining on in the quarter, Porzio scored to give SU the 2-1 lead going into the second quarter.
Susquehanna increased the team's lead to 3-1 less than a minute into the second quarter on a Chet McLaughlin goal. The Blue Jays cut the lead in half (3-2) with 59 seconds remaining in the half which remained the score at halftime.
In the third quarter, Porzio scored his second goal of the game with at the 10:44 mark to give SU the 4-2 lead but two minutes later Elizabethtown scored to cut the lead to one (4-3). With 3:07 on the clock, the Blue Jays knotted the game at four as Nick Specht scored the last goal of the quarter.
Elizabethtown took a 7-4 lead before SU's Jake Calder scored to come within two (7-5) with 5:14 remaining in the game. However, the Blue Jays increased their lead to four (9-5) with 3:07 on the clock. Susquehanna scored two more goals with the last coming at the 1:46 mark to pull SU within three (10-7) but it was not enough as Elizabethtown held on to win 10-7.
The Crusaders are back in action on Tuesday, March 22 when the team travels to Eastern for a 4:00 p.m. game.
